The Frantz Fanon Foundation is pleased to learn that the assassination of Walter Rodney, June 13, 1980, whose role in the approach of the black question and whose contributions within the framework of a reflection on Pan-Africanism are undeniable and of ‘a founding aid to think about the emancipation of African and Afro-descendant peoples, is finally recognized as such and not as an accidental death due to the explosion of a talkie-walkie. An explosive mechanism had indeed been intentionally introduced.
The state finally admits having committed a state crime by commissioning an extrajudicial execution.
Walter Rodney, originally from Guyana, killed when he was only 41, teacher and initiator of the WPA-Working People’s Alliance, has become an important figure in Pan-Africanism and has, among others, developed the concept of people’s emancipation and of a multiracial democracy, was one of the most important figures of dissent and opposition to the regime.
The government of Guyana, after having denied and camouflaged the truth about a murder that it had mandated by facilitating, among other things, the exfiltration of its author to French Guyana, recognizes its responsibility and specifies that the qualification of the death on the certificate will be changed.
For years, the family of Walter Rodney, his wife and three children, had been mobilized to have the murder recognized. A commission of inquiry initiated in 2014, specifies, in its report submitted in 2016, that « the assassin acted as an agent of the State, with the support of individuals in positions of command in the apparatus State (…) »-Hélène Ferrarini, In Guyana, light on a State crime on Le Monde diplomatique, August 1, 2020-. Thus, this commission of inquiry totally invalidates the false conclusions of the first commission of 1988.
In Guyana, the silence surrounding Walter Rodney’s work comes to an end when he is internationally recognized; his books will enter school and university courses. When power calls into question its colonial conception of the exercise of power over both beings and knowledge, it allows those who are considered racialized, excluded and precarious non-beings to come out of the shadows. An important part of their dignity is returned to them. It is a door that opens onto hope.

La Fondation Frantz Fanon se félicite d’apprendre que l’assassinat de Walter Rodney, le 13 juin 1980, dont le rôle dans l’approche de la question noire et dont les apports dans le cadre d’une réflexion sur le panafricanisme sont indéniables et d’une aide fondatrice pour penser l’émancipation des peuples africains et afro-descendants, est enfin reconnu comme tel et non comme une mort accidentelle due à l’explosion d’un talkie-walkie. Un mécanisme explosif y avait bien été intentionnellement introduit.
L’Etat reconnaît enfin avoir commis un crime d’Etat par la commission d’une exécution extrajudiciaire.

Ainsi, cette commission d’enquête invalide totalement les conclusions mensongères de la première commission de1988.
En Guyana, l’omerta entourant l’œuvre de Walter Rodney prend fin alors qu’il est internationalement reconnu; ses livres vont entrer dans les cursus scolaires et universitaires.
Lorsque le pouvoir remet en cause sa conception coloniale de l’exercice du pouvoir à la fois sur les Êtres et sur la construction de la connaissance, cela permet à ceux qui sont considérés comme des Non-Êtres racisés, exclus et précarisés, de sortir de l’ombre. Une part importante de leur dignité leur est rendue. C’est une porte qui s’ouvre sur l’espoir.
